Healthy Portsmouth Coalition
In 2010, the YMCA of Portsmouth became a key partner in the Healthy Portsmouth
Coalition. Healthy Portsmouth is a program of Portsmouth’s Action Communities for
Health, Innovation, and Environmental Change (ACHIEVE) grant. The Consortium for Infant and Child Health at Eastern Virginia Medical School manages the grant on behalf of area partners. ACHIEVE is funded by the CDC Healthy Communities Program in collaboration with the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors.
Healthy Portsmouth Mission and Vision:
Mission: A coalition of community leaders committed to promote change through partnership-building and policy-making for a healthier Portsmouth.
Vision: The healthiest place in Hampton Roads to live, learn, play, work and worship
To help realize the vision, the Y and other Healthy Portsmouth partners created a Community Action Plan for 2010-2011. Objectives were to: Improve Walkability, Enhance School Health & Wellness, Decrease Tobacco Smoke Exposure, Promote Breastfeeding, and Increase Healthy Messages and Activities. The YMCA of Portsmouth is excited to be a part of this movement to bring positive change to our community. For more information or to get involved, you can contact our Y representative Doris Cobb at dcobb@portsmouthymca.org or Healthy Portsmouth directly at healthyportsmouth@gmail.com.
Swim/Gym Program with Portsmouth Public Schools
The Swim/Gym program is a joint partnership between the YMCA of Portsmouth and the Portsmouth Public School system to provide our children an opportunity to develop a life skill of water safety. Coming together over the common bond of ensuring our youth’s development is an important step in their success as future leaders. For more information on the Swim/Gym program contact info@portsmouthymca.org.
May 16th - Annual Golf Classic
The YMCA of Portsmouth’s Annual Golf Classic benefits the Making A Difference
Campaign, which provides opportunities for youth in our community to attend
life-enriching programs such as Before/After School, Summer Camp, and Swimming
Lessons. Donations also provide activities and memberships for families and individuals who would not be able to participate in Y programs without financial support.
This year’s event will be held at the Riverfront Golf Club in Suffolk on May 16, 2012. Format will be 4-person Captain's Choice, with shotgun start at 12:00PM. Registration form and additional information is available on downloadable brochure, and registration is currently open online under "Golf Tournament".
Silent Auction and Wine Tasting
Benefitting the YMCA of Portsmouth's annual giving campaign
Thank you to all who attended this year's event at the Portsmouth Woman's Club. Without your support, we would not be able to raise the funds needed to provide memberships, Before/After School care, Summer Camps, Swim Lessons, and other valuable programming to those who may not otherwise be able to afford them.
Thank you for attending, and we hope to see you again next year!
